A Short History of the Watterson Family
|
|
The history of the Watterson family from the Woods Chapel district of the Parish of Artrea,
County Londonderry, N. Ireland, starts at the end of the 17th century. They are not connected
in any way with Wattersons from any other source, but are a branch of the Waterhouse family
which originated in 1250 AD when Roger De Leumesin,Castellan of Nottingham Castle, assumed the
name De Waterhouse.
Beginning with John Waterhouse, leaseholder of the greater part of the townland of Lisnamorrow
in the early 1700's, the family grew from five households in 1740 - eight in 1766 - to eighteen
in 1831. Between the years of 1792 and 1811 every family of Waterhouse in the County of Londonderry
changed their name to Watterson. This name change has been verified by the Director of the Ulster
Historical Foundation Belfast.
The mid 1800's saw the emigration of quite a few Wattersons to Canada and the United States of
America, and today there are members of the Watterson family in Ireland, England, Scotland,
Canada, U.S.A., Brazil, Australia and New Zealand etc.etc.
If you are connected in any way to these Wattersons or any of their related families then this
is the place for you.
